What Are Invisalign Attachments?

Invisalign attachments are “bumps” made of composite resin that your dentist adds to specific teeth to help secure your aligners in place. They typically need to stay on your teeth for your entire treatment, and though they are completely painless to attach, they could cause some discomfort when you advance to a new set of aligners due to an increase in tension.

Do I Need Invisalign Attachments?

Many patients worry about needing attachments because they are concerned these will increase the cost of their treatment. The good news is that your treatment is based on the complexity of your case, not on your attachments, so they shouldn’t add to the price, nor will it save you any money to refuse them. In fact, getting them will most likely help keep your treatment as brief as possible, and time is money!

Removing Your Invisalign Attachments

Once your Invisalign treatment is complete, your dentist will remove your attachments. Though they are tooth-colored and therefore discreet, be sure to take excellent care of them during use, as they can discolor and become very obvious if they develop stains.

To remove your attachments, your dentist will use a drill to buff them off and then polish the tooth underneath. This is completely painless and will not injure your tooth, so no anesthesia is needed for the procedure.

Remember, if you have Invisalign attachments, you shouldn’t notice much of a difference in your treatment. Aside from some minor sensitivity, they should help your teeth align in perfect harmony, right on schedule, and when they’re ready to come off, you shouldn’t feel anything but smoother teeth!
